Coverslips

Applying coverslip

Coverslips placed over the top of mounting media, such as 20% KOH or liquid paraffin, provide a flat surface giving greatly improved resolution and giving lens protection when using the dry objectives.

  • They are not generally suitable for use with immersion oil as immersion objectives are designed to operate very close to the specimens
  • Try to spread out and flatten specimens so that the depth of the mountant, e.g. paraffin, is as little as possible whilst still covering the entire specimen. This will save time in focusing up and down and give better resolution
  • Ensure that the specimen is not too crowded with material. If necessary divide it into two or more preparations. Examination of a thin specimen is much quicker and more accurate
