Submission of the swab

  • Specify if you want fungal (dermatophytes, yeasts, others) isolation (dermatophytes, yeasts, others) otherwise bacteria will be normally assumed
  • Warn the lab if you suspect an unusual organism which might require special media or incubation, e.g. slow-growing actinomycetes such as Nocardia, mycobacteria
  Pustules
  • Transport medium should be used to prevent death of the sampled organisms before they are processed by the microbiology laboratory
  • Swabs should be cultured with minimal delay even when using transport medium. The medium supports growth and contaminants may overgrow the pathogens, particularly if the specimen is in the post in hot weather or over a week-end
  • At week-ends and holiday periods store the swab in transport medium at 4°C and then post after the holiday, or deliver it by courier
