In pruritus, parasitic infestation is usually
a differential diagnosis. Failure to demonstrate the parasites
does not rule out infestation. Although serological tests
can be done for sarcoptic mange, they are not available for
other parasites.
Treatment with an antiparasitic wash, such as amitraz (Aludex),
can give a fairly quick response in, for instance, sarcoptic
mange and cheyletiellosis. If no other antipruritic treatment
is being used this may be an important diagnostic indicator. |
