Face of a West Highland white terrier with atopy. Treatment with prednisolone stopped the pruritus and allowed hair regrowth. When treatment was stopped the pruritus and hair loss recurred.

 

Allergies are steroid-responsive at anti-inflammatory doses, unless severe. Response to such treatment will thus point towards allergic disease. The relief they may give to the pruritic animal will also be very welcome.

Beware of adopting steroids without careful thought as they may promote infections and infestations, they may mask other inflammatory conditions and may delay the use of diagnostic procedures, such as the intradermal allergy test.
