Essential Equipment

  • Clippers to remove unwanted hair
  • Liquid paraffin to lubricate the skin for scrapings and as a mounting medium
  • Cotton wool - to apply paraffin or clean skin with spirit
  • Large curved scalpel blades for scrapings
  • Epilation forceps or haemostats for hair plucking
  • Swabs for sampling lesions or ears - to make smears
  • Scotch tape (not cellophane) for tape strips
  • Large format paper (c. 50 cm wide) for coat brushings
  • Illuminated hand or wall-mounted lens
  • Wood’s lamp
  • Precleaned glass slides and cover slips
  • Stains capable of staining inflammatory cells, bacteria and yeasts e.g. DiffQuik
  • Microscope with low power (x 2-4), medium power (x 0), high dry (x 40) and oil immersion (x 100) objectives
  • Immersion oil and lens cleaning tissue
