- Put questions to the owner pertinent to the case problem
- Relate historical evidence from the owner to clinical
and laboratory findings
- Discuss skin-related problems of obtaining reliable
information and dealing with sensitive issues of owner-pet
interaction

- Understand how to examine the skin
- Describe the appearance of the normal skin and coat
- Identify and describe lesions caused by cutaneous disease
- Understand the importance of general physical examination
in dermatological diagnosis

- Recognise lesions associated with pustular, fungal,
protozoal and parasitic diseases
- Describe how to sample such lesions for cytology and
culture
- Stain (where necessary), examine and make diagnostic
and therapeutic decisions on the basis of such samples
- Describe the common types of cutaneous bacteria, fungi
and parasites, and their principal characteristics
- Understand the principles and practice of antibiotic
sensitivity testing
