Overcrowding of teeth and malocclusions are more common in small
breeds and brachycephalic dogs. This may cause up to 90° rotation
of teeth or overlapping of cusps leading to the entrapment of food
and other debris. Mouth breathing in brachycephalics can also dry
out the oral tissues.
Genetic factors are also responsible for types of periodontal disease
in Greyhounds, Schnauzers, Maltese terriers and also Abysinnian
and Somali cats.
