Parasitology - further reading and internet sites
While we provide you with most of the information that you need to pass your examinations you are encouraged to follow up topics covered in lectures and
practical classes by reading textbooks and published articles. Topic-related reading lists are listed on
some lecture page but you should be regularly scanning journals such as the Vet.Record, In Practice and UK Vet for extra information.Textbooks
- B.E.Matthews, An Introduction to Parasitology
- An introductory textbook providing an overview of parasite biology which
uses examples from all groups of parasites - both human and veterinary.
- Taylor, Coop & Wall Veterinary Parasitology (Third edition of the
Urquhart, Armour, Duncan, Dunn & Jennings text recommended in previous
years)
- A general textbook covering a wide range of both temperate and
tropical parasites but now organised by host rather than parasites and much
larger, heavier and of course more expensive than editions 1 & 2
- J.D.Smyth. Introduction to Animal Parasitology.
- A more general parasitology textbook includes both human and veterinary parasites a bit USA orientated though.
-
AR Walker The Arthropods of Humans and Domestic Animals

Journals
At this stage you are best to restrict yourself to the more general veterinary journals rather than delving into the more specialized research-orientated journals unless specifically directed by one of us.
General journals
- Veterinary Record
- We are sure that you are reading this already, even if its just for the jobs.
- In Practice
- Sometimes carries very readable review articles on particular diseases eg coccidiosis but often parasites are included in reviews of general clinical conditions eg diarrhoea.
- UK Vet
- Similar to In Practice but also includes UK disease forecast which gives you useful epidemiological information on a range of parasites affecting livestock especially helminths.
- Parasitology Today
- A bit more specialized but regularly carries up to date review articles on individual parasites.
Parasitology Journals
- Parasitology
- Experimental Parasitology
- International Journal for Parasitology
