Syngamus trachaea - male and female

Group: Bursate, migratory, Strongyle nematode
Host species: Domestic and game birds
Features:
  • Reddish worms
  • Male (small) and female (large) permanently in copulo forming a Y-shape
  • The only nematode found in this location
  • Small buccal capsule with teeth
  • Heavy infestations cause obstruction of the airway which gives rise to a characteristic "gaping", hence the common name of "gapeworm"
