Oesophagostomum - nodules on gut wall

Group: Bursate, non-migratory, Strongyle nematodes
Host species: Ruminants, pigs
Features:
  • The whitish, raised structures are nodules which enclose the L3 stage  developing in the mucosa
  • Nodules can be up to 5cm  across and contain greenish eosinophilic pus and larvae
  • The moult to the L4 stage takes place inside the nodule and the L4 stage then emerge into the gut
  • Heavy infestations can lead to an ulcerative colitis
