Acute Eimeria tenella infection

This is shows the appearance of the caecae from a bird suffering from acute E.tenella infection. The dark red colouration is due to haemorrhage into the gut caused by cell destruction when the merozoites break out of the gut cells. Examination of the gut contents of the opened caecum will show the presence of large numbers of schizont and merozoite stages along with host cell debris.
