Organism: Babesia major
Host: Cow
Preparation: Giemsa's stained blood smear

B.major is the "large" Babesia species found in cattle in UK. It has a far more limited distribution than B.divergens that is linked to its tick vector Haemaphysalis punctata which is only found in the South of England.

In blood smears B.major organisms are larger than B.divergens and, when found in pairs, lie either at an acute angle or side-by-side in the cell.
