Case Review (2 of 6)

The Rash

Such a rash is commonly associated with pyoderma and in this instance we have the history of apparent antibiotic therapy (we could check this) with temporary response after therapy for a period of about a week.

ventral pyoderma
Ventral pyoderma

It seems that the antibiotic was given together with corticosteriods, or so we surmise. If only antibiotic had been given and we had a good response we could have been more confident that the rash was primarily bacterial. The concurrent administration of steriods means that we cannot draw this firm conclusion.

Steriods are likely to promote the pyoderma and the course of antibiotics was too short so rapid recurrence is not unexpected.

Bacterial skin infection can be very itchy and this may explain why the steriods alone did not work in this case after the rash appeared.
