There was a wide variation in the concentration of Substance P in individual lambs, despite the use of special inhibitory enzymes in the blood collection tube to prevent its degradation during storage. Most of the response in rubber ring castrated lambs was associated with the response in one animal.  More work is required to identify the importance or not of this neural peptide (in plasma or CSF) for the assessment of animal pain.
