Introduction
Many people own pets, yet few owners understand much about why their pet behaves the way it does.
This CD-ROM based package will provide users with information on animal behaviour, how the behaviour of companion animals is affected by the environment in which they are kept and how this can lead to the development of behavioural problems.
What topics does the package cover?
The package consists of three sections with a total of twelve modules.
Behaviour
- Module 1 - Defining, describing & measuring behaviour.
- Module 2 - Learning & motivation.
- Module 3 - Social behaviour & communication.
- Module 4 - Domestication & problems of the captive environment.
Welfare
- Module 5 - Defining & assessing welfare.
- Module 6 - Stress & pain.
Problem behaviour
- Module 7 - Behaviour modification.
- Module 8 - Dogs.
- Module 9 - Cats.
- Module 10 - Horses.
- Module 11 - Rabbits & rodents (guinea pigs, rats, mice, hamsters & gerbils).
- Module 12 - Exotics. (African grey parrots & Green iguanas.)
Modules 8-12 include information on:
- Ancestry and domestication.
- Social behaviour.
- Sensory perception.
- Communication.
- Common behavioural problems.
- Possible ways of dealing with specific behavioural problems.
What is the format of the package?
Each module begins with a list of learning objectives and ends with a summary of the module. Within each module, you will have the choice of reading either summarised information or in-depth information.
Tasks within each module will prompt you to think about the information you have read.
Who is the package aimed at?
The package is aimed at:
- anyone with an interest in companion animal behaviour and welfare.
- vets or vet nurses who deal with clients with pet behavioural problems.
What level is the package aimed at?
The material is aimed at post-graduate level, although anyone can use the CD-ROM.
Can I gain a qualification through this package?
No, unfortunately no certificate of completion can be offered on completion of the course material at the present time.
How much will the CD-ROM cost?
The CD-ROM will cost £49.03 (£40.86 + VAT).
Will the CD-ROM run on my computer?
The CD-ROM is designed to run on computers using Windows 95 or more recent operating systems. You should install an up-to-date version of your web browser - best viewed with Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Adobe Reader and Macromedia Authorware web player should also be installed. (Installation files are included on the CD-ROM, however you may wish to ensure you have the latest versions by downloading them from the Adobe and Macromedia websites.)
Is the CD-ROM available for Macs and PCs?
Yes, the CD-ROM is available for both Macs (OS9 and OS10)and PCs.
Who has developed the package?
The package has been developed by the Animal Behaviour & Welfare Group at the University of Edinburgh. The material has been produced and edited by Dr Shirley Seaman and Dr Natalie Waran in collaboration with Clare Newlands from the CLIVE Unit (Computer Aided Learning in Veterinary Education).
When will the package be available?
The CD-ROM is currently unavailable.
How do I order the CD-ROM ?
To pay by credit card:
- Follow the link ‘Click here to make a payment’.
- Enter the number of CD ROMs you would like and click "add to basket"
- You will now be shown your shopping basket. To complete the purchase click on "check out"
- You will now need to login to ePay or create an account. Unless you have previously purchased items from ePay you will need to choose 'This is my first visit' and create an account.
- Please note - when entering your 'Billing Address' please ensure this is the address at which your credit or debit card is registered (i.e. where the bills are sent). The billing address you provide may be checked with your card issuer for security reasons.
- Once all your details have been entered you will be shown a confirmation screen. Click on 'Proceed to Payment', enter your card details and click 'Proceed'. Your card will then be charged and you will receive a confirmation e-mail from store@ed.ac.uk.
